Since our first seminar last month on solicitor and client costs disputes, the Civil Justice Council Working Group has published its Consultation Paper on changes to the Solicitors Act 1974. If adopted and passed by Parliament, this will be the biggest change in the law on solicitor and client costs since the passage of the Solicitors Act in 1974, two legal generations ago.
To put matters in historical perspective, in 1974, the doomed Ted Heath was Prime Minister leading a government in constant crisis, accused of multiple U-turns on policy and grappling with the after effects of an oil price shock, consequent upon war in the Middle East and the UK was working from home, utilising a 3 day week.
How times have changed.
Dan Stacey and I, will take you through the proposals, and unpick what could happen, what new problems might arise from the proposals, and what matters solicitors and those who advise them, need to be thinking about, as part of the ever changing landscape, of compliance, regulation and dealing with clients.
